The Storm

Eyes glimmered as she entered the circle. The air seemed thicker, Ali could still feel the steel on her hand, the fire in her mind, the beast she could become.

The double. The part of her she couldn't accept.

A shadow. Her fiercest protector and her scariest nightmare.

Feelslikea dream, she thought.

Ali lowered her gaze, seeking truth in the earth under her palms. She closed her eyes, summoning the courage to tell the queen and her tribe her deepest fear. "I have things in me...feelings, really."

She shook her head, as if she could force the darkness out.

"Tell us, Ali... We will protect you," assured Opia.

'Her eyes are pearls,' thought Ali when she noticed their strange pale color.

"They are dark and dangerous for those with ego... They create a battle starting when the selfish and the selfless meet. I have primal thoughts colliding with futuristic ones. Unmet desires. I do want peace, harmony and unity. But I... I also sometimes despise us... I feel disdain for cruel ones and indifference for the ordinary, thinking less of them than the souls filled with light and creativity. I don't see people equally. I've come to realize that. I want to. I thought I did. But it's a lie we tell ourselves to bare our weaknesses. Strength is in empathy, in peace, in the good you can make... But there is a storm in me, inside a lot of us. She's the same, even if she changes her reasons. Mine wants to be unleashed and to destroy. Eliminate everything that hurts her, everything that wants to diminish or tarnish her essence. She wants to play the tyrant she is."

Ali stopped and opened her eyes. She could feel Opia's gaze looking through her. It seemed to help her continue.

"My motives don't matter, they were justifiable... They used to seem right... But a storm is a storm. My darkness doesn't care about the justice behind my cause, it just needs me to feed it. But how can I be better if I listen to that voice? That whisper? The melody of the storm raging. Listen to my doppelganger, who's hiding in mirrors, refusing to learn to be quiet? How can I help instead of hate? Show the ones causing the storm that we're all light deep down and nothing else truly matters. How can I help if I'm not fully love myself? If I'm not in love fully with my self? She is still me, isn't she? How can I stop her and love her at the same time?...I mean... Me."

Ali gasped as if saying all that without being interrupted was a first for her and took all the air she had left. She realized she had said so much and nothing could be erased. Embarrassed, she felt the snake tighten around her neck. Shame always knew how to silence her.

The tribe joined hands. Opia sat close, took her palms into hers, honoured the conflicted woman entrusted her wisdom to heal her weaknesses.

Opia smiled. The crystal in her crown flickered as she took a deep breath. "I stay up late... Drawing things I've never showed. Writing thoughts I've never said. You are not the only one who wonders about the darkness of our doubles. Let me ask you... Can you master your light? Use it in the right way? Channel energy? Elevate, convey information, align your chakras? Now...can you master your darkness? Tame your demons? Do you pretend they don't exist... Encouraging them to overwhelm you? Or do you see into their pain... Able to make them surrender? Can you?"

"I...I'm not sure..." answered Ali, troubled.

"Make them. Seize your storm...your doppelgänger... Tell her you love her and you know she's built from pain. Tell her only her surrender will make the world better," whispered Opia softly.
