New 'Blade Runner 2049' Trailer Released
Blade Runner 2049's trailer looks set to hype up science fiction fans for the sequel to Ridley Scott's original.
"There is an order to things."
Science fiction fans have never stopped talking about Ridley Scott's classic science fiction film Blade Runner. The original, starring Harrison Ford, Sean Young, and Rutger Hauer, remains a favorite among genre fans for numerous reasons. The cyberpunk aesthetic, the complex questions about the nature of humanity, and, of course, Harrison Ford.
Is Deckard a human or a replicant? It's a question that science fiction fans (and the people behind the movie) have debated with no real answer for many years.
But it looks as though, soon, we will have an answer. Maybe.
The new film, directed by Denis Vileneuve (the master film maker behind Prisoners, Scicario, and Arrival), stars Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Drive) as Blade Runner Officer K, Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Dallas Buyers Club), Robin Wright (The Princess Bride, House of Cards, Wonder Woman), and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), as well as returning Hollywood icon, Harrison Ford, reprising his role as Deckard.
The film looks set to take place over 40 years into the future. While the first trailer depicted a world that looked raw, dead, and very red, this trailer sheds more light on the direction Vileneuve intends on taking the sci-fi classic.
We see a combination of the classic Blade Runner imagery – tall cities full of lights – but also a lot of red and sandy stuff. Is this Earth? Is this, perhaps, an off-world colony alluded to in the original? Or are we just shooting in the dark here?
It looks like we will be exploring the nature of the Blade Runners, questioning more directly whether or not it is moral to "retire" sentient life. But we'll have to wait until the film comes out, first.
Will the movie be a worthy follow-up to one of the greatest science fiction films of all time? Will it be a colossal disappointment? We'll have to wait until Blade Runner 2049 comes out on October 6, 2017 to know for sure.
