When you hear about cool and futuristic guns your first thoughts are probably about science fiction movies where these guns couldn't possibly exist. Well, you'd be surprised to know that some of these futuristic weapons do in fact exist. While gun control is a hotly debated argument in the United States, a vast majority of the weapons featured here are for military use only.

While there have been weapons other than guns used in war, most wars are still primarily fought with soldiers on the ground using a gun of some kind or another. Whether they be revolvers, shotguns, or rifles, these are the 10 coolest futuristic guns that actually exist.

AA12 Atchisson Assault Shotgun

This futuristic gun is an automatic shotgun that can fire 300 rounds per minute. The most prominent feature of this weapon is its reduced recoil, especially when compared to other shotguns. This gun only comes in the form of a fully automatic weapon.

The AA-12 was originally developed in 1972 by Maxwell Atchisson. The current model had been a work in progress over 18 years after it was sold to Military Police Systems.

XM25 CDTE

The CDTE is a grenade launcher that spirals grenades through the air like a football. CDTE stands for Counter Defilade Target Engagement, which means the grenade can be tracked and set to detonate at the right moment.

This weapon is also known as the Punisher and Individual Semiautomatic Air Burst System. This futuristic gun was first fielded to soldiers serving in the War in Afghanistan in 2010.

The XM25 CDTE fires 25mm grenades set to explode in mid-air near the target. However, the detonating distance can be manually adjusted by up to 10 feet shorter or farther.

ZiP Pistol

This new kind of pistol is one of many futuristic guns that redesigns the classic gun. The ZiP Pistol uses plastic in this weapon to leave space for customization by attaching extended stocks and large ammunition clips.

US Fire Arms (USFA), the creator of this weapon, says ZiP is the code for the future of fun, and "the future is now." This gun is very unconventional in terms of its shape. It is built around a full polymer body, with aluminum parts, and features a steel 5.2" barrel.

PHASR Rifle

The personnel halting and stimulation response (PHASR) rifle was developed by the US Department of Defense. This futuristic gun is still in its prototype stage and is a non-lethal weapon, designed for blinding targets.

The PHASR rifle is a blinding laser weapon meant to temporarily disorient and blind a target. Although the UN Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons banned laser weapons in 1995, the PHASR is exempt from this ban since its effects are intended to be temporary, making it one of the most useful futuristic guns.

FN Five-Seven Pistol

This gun is famed for its ability to penetrate many types of body armor. This futuristic gun is so powerful that United States civilians can only purchase it with sporting ammunition.

Developed in Belgium, this weapon is used by 20 nations and has seen action in many wars, including Afghanistan, and the Libyan Civil War.

Made as a companion pistol to the P90, this semi-automatic pistol shares many of the P90's design features. The FN Five-Seven is a lightweight polymer-based weapon with a large magazine capacity. It also has ambidextrous controls and a low recoil.

KRISS Vector

The KRISS Vector is a submachine gun designed to reduce the barrel riding up and recoil.

KRISS Vector is a series of weapons with similar designs, just slightly different features. The K10 was announced in 2011 and made use of a telescopic stock that collapses into the upper receiver rather than the folding stock.

The most recent editions of the KRISS are the Gen II models that came out in 2015. These models feature a redesigned pistol grip, safety selector, and compatibility with a new 9mm lower.

Chiappa Rhino

What makes this Italian revolver one of the futuristic guns on this list is that it recoils straight back into your hand, rather than jolting upwards, making the gun more accurate. The Rhino also fires from the bottom-most chamber of the cylinder, rather than firing from the topmost chamber.

Chiappa manufactures the Rhino in a variety of double-barrel models. It's aluminum alloy frame and barrel shroud make the Rhino lightweight and easy to carry.

TrackingPoint .338 ShadowTrax8

American company TrackingPoint produces rifles with precision-guided technology that calculates the range of a target and optimises the gun accordingly. The ShadowTrax 8 is TrackingPoint's all-purpose gun.

The futuristic weapon features a stainless steel Stiller action and 22" Shilen barrel. It also has an optic that tracks targets, an onboard weather station, an integrated laser ranger finding that automatically updates the ballistics data, and a 1400 yard lock range.

This weapon is simplistic and reliable, paired with the patented lock-and-load precision which makes this the most innovative bolt-action hunting rifle on the market.

Armatix iP1

The Armatix iP1 is one of the safest futuristic guns, requiring the use of a fingerprint-enabled watch within 25cm of the gun to fire. This magazine fed semi-automatic pistol is chambered for the .22 long rifle rimfire cartridge.

The Armatix iP1 is marketed as a James Bond style handgun making it one of the coolest on the market. This gun is lightweight, 18.3 oz, with an effective firing range of 75 yards.

This gun specifically has sparked many conversations on the gun control debate. Proponents of the Second Amendment say these smart-gun features impose on their right to freely bear arms.

CornerShot

The CornerShot guns were invented by Lt. Col. Amos Golan of the Israeli Defense Forces along with the help of American Investors. Initially designed for SWAT teams and special forces to be used in situations involving terrorists and hostages, this futuristic gun provides the ability to shoot around corners.

CornerShot guns can be used as a semi-automatic pistol or a grenade launcher, making them one of the more versatile futuristic guns created. This weapon is used by many special forces in the Middle East and Asia.
