The GoGreen Revolution! What is Happening?

The Go Green Revolution has been started to help us as humans and to help the Earth.

As a young person in the world we live in, one of the biggest causes of anxiety is that fact that our world is dying. Climate change is rapidly accelerating, oil is becoming less and less abundant, and we have yet to find a consistent way of producing energy that is clean and doesn’t hurt the environment. These concerns have caused society to start a revolution. The Go Green Revolution has been started to help us as humans and to help the Earth. The importance of the Revolution reaches every individual in the world.

With the revolution, people in the world have become more conscious of what they eat. The focus of food has helped people eat healthier. There has been a focus on all natural and organic foods, compared to the factory farmed food that was popular at the start of the 21st century. Factory farms are a huge component of methane emissions in the world and are a big reason for the failing health of human beings and the earth. Over 37% of methane emissions come from factory farming according to OneGreenPlanet.org. For those who may not know… methane emissions have a global warming potential 20 times higher than carbon dioxide. Thanks to the Go Green Revolution, we now know about factory farms and their dangers.

Another important thing that the Go Green Revolution has brought the world is the search for sustainable energy. The world has mainly received its power and energy from three resources in the past; Coal, Natural Gas, and Oil. All three of these are nonrenewable and have fatal consequences to the Earth. The United States itself gets 81% of its energy from these nonrenewable resources. Our oil reserves, as of 2013, will only last us a little more than 50 years. Coal, the dirtiest and most polluted of the fossil fuels, will last only 150 years. Not only are we running out of these energy sources, they are extremely harmful for the environment. The Go Green Revolution has created an urgency around finding a clean, renewable source of power.

So, what has this urgency around finding a sustainable resource done? Well, it has inspired our greatest minds to focus on this problem. Elon Musk, creator of PayPal, SpaceX, and Tesla, has put much of his focus on this issue. He, like me, thinks that the future of our energy is the sun. Solar Energy accounts for 99% of the outside energy taken in by the Earth. Solar energy is the most reliable form of energy. The sun rises every day. My idea is that solar panels take over the world. Elon Musk is working to design a roof made of solar panels that will be able to power a whole home while still looking nice on a house. I would like to see solar panels become the norm in the world. However we make this happen is fine, whether it be through a government regulation or simply a trend that everyone is doing. I mentioned the government, I think they should lead the solar panel effort because by breaking down the numbers, it’s easy to see how the U.S. could be powered by all solar panels. In a 2008 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the amount of area needed to supply all of the U.S. with solar power is .06% of America’s total land mass… that’s only 11,400,000 acres… that’s only a little south of 18,000 miles.

The Go Green Revolution has been very important for the Earth. It has allowed us to see the harms of factory farming, what it does to the environment and human health. It has also allowed us to see our sustainable energy problems like the fact that we don’t have enough resources to last the earth 200 years. This fact makes my idea of solar power being the world’s number one power source very practical and even necessary for our survival. We will someday power the United States with just solar power.
