Chapter Two

The dining room was as elegant as the ball room in Cinderella’s castle. It smelled of cheesy goodness and fresh lettuce. My stomach growled at the aroma filling the room. I see a small empty table over by the window overlooking the garden. I get settled in just in time as waiters in dark colored chef coats walked out delivering food to every table.

“Thank you so much,” I say as my waiter set everything down in front of me. Such a beautiful set up. A small chef salad with all the trimmings in a small little bowl, a small bowl of tomato soup with a little fresh graded parmesan sprinkled on top, and a half corner cut grilled cheese with the cheese melted so perfectly. All lined up perfectly on a rectangular plate.

“Would you like water, tea, or milk ma’am?” He asked with a smile.

“Tea please,” I reply.

The lunch was magnificent. Everything was delicious and filling. My stomach was so full, but that didn’t stop me from going exploring. I walked out of the double French doors leading from the dining room into the garden. It felt warm and cozy. The flowers were in full bloom, even thought it was mid fall season. It was if they were magical. Magic. There was that word again. Thinking about it made me want to practice. I look around to see if anyone else was out here, there wasn’t anyone that I could see. I see a leaf on the sidewalk by a pine tree; I raise my hand to concentrate on levitating it. But to my dismay, nothing happened. I won’t have full magic until my 21st birthday, but I still had some. The basics as my mother put it, so it was a little disappointing. Although I never practiced until now. Guess it will take some time.

I walk back inside not paying attention to where I was going, when I run into someone.

“Oh goodness, I am so sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going,” I say so apologetically.

“No problem, I don’t blame you. It is so beautiful out here I would be distracted too,” he says with such a gentle tone and handsome smile. He was tall, dark, and handsome. My type of guy perfectly, which always got me into trouble. His six-foot build balanced my five-foot three perfectly. His bright, brown eyes were looking deep into my dark blue eyes. It felt as if he was looking deep into my soul.

“My name is Emily. What is yours?” I ask

“My name is Derek. Derek Lordson,” he replied.

“It’s nice to meet you Derek,” I say with a smile before walking past him into the dining room.

I don’t know what it was, but after I walked passed Derek, I got a cold chill. One that was kind of scary, not exciting. I’ve had some of them before and usually it’s when I catch an ex of mine cheating on me or lying to me. Maybe that was part of my magic. Being able to sense something bad about to happen before it did, but why Derek? I didn’t even know him, we just met. How could I have this feeling?

I hurry back to my room and lock my door behind me. The more I thought about Derek, the more awkward and uncomfortable I began to feel. My first instinct is to call my mom, but I left without saying bye so I can figure some things out on my own. So, I guess I am on my own with this one.

That thought alone terrified me.
