A Classic 'Doctor Who' Companion Will Make a Huge Comeback This Christmas
Another previous companion has now been confirmed to join the main cast for the epic festive episode.
It's clear that this year's Doctor Who Christmas special is set to be huge, explosive and pay a lot of homage to the "classic" era of the series. Earlier this year it was confirmed that Harry Potter star David Bradley will return to the sci-fi series and portray the First Doctor.
Judging by the trailer, the First Doctor will be accompanied by his companion Polly. However, it has now been confirmed that the First Doctor will have a full TARDIS team this Christmas, as another previous companion has now been confirmed to join the main cast for the epic festive episode.
Blast from the Past
Flying way back to the 1960s, the First and Second Doctor traveled through time and space with a Royal Navy seaman named Ben. Originally, Ben was played by Michael Craze, who is sadly no longer with us.
Craze's passing has stopped departing showrunner Steven Moffat from bringing back those lovable companions. News has emerged in the latest edition of the Doctor Who Magazine that soap star Jared Garfield will be joining #DoctorWho as Ben Jackson. Garfield is currently most famous for his role as Nathan Nightingale in the soap opera Hollyoaks.
Everything You Need To Know About The Festive Edition
This year the Christmas special has been given a title that fits in well with the holiday tradition. After the rumored title of "The Doctors" was shot down, it was revealed in a trailer at SDCC that Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi's final episode will be titled "Twice Upon A Time."
Joining Capaldi, Bradley and Garfield will be actor and writer Mark Gatiss, who is rumored to be playing a younger version of the Brigadier. However, Gatiss nor the BBC have yet confirmed this, claiming he is playing "The General." A familiar face will also be making one last appearance alongside Gatniss: Pearl Mackie.
At the end of Season 10, fans witnessed Mackie depart the show as she went off to travel the universe with her crush, Heather. Now, fans will get to see Bill Potts one last time as she makes a surprising comeback. The question on everyone's lips right now is: How does Bill return?
The Christmas special this year will primarily focus on Capaldi's regeneration. Fans saw the Twelfth Doctor refuse to change during the Season 10 finale, leaving fans hopeful. Sadly, Capaldi will be stepping down and passing the TARDIS key to the next Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. Speaking about the special, Moffat said:
"It's the 12th Doctor saying to Number One, 'Listen, you have to [change] or all of this stuff won't happen!' and the 1st Doctor saying, 'Well, what about you?' – they go off on a crazy adventure with Mark Gatiss and Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) and decide whether or not they're going to carry on... which of course, they are!"
The villain (if there is one) is yet to be revealed. On the other hand, villain or not, it's highly likely to pan out well either way. As we know, a Christmas Special doesn't need to have a huge, life-threatening enemy for it to be top-quality material. After all, Christmas is about happiness, though not always in the universe of Doctor Who.
