Who is the titular 'Last Jedi?' And is the word plural, referring to both Luke and Rey, or singular? Fans may finally have the answer now and it's all thanks to the latest Star Wars: Look & Find book. Two pages in particular are of interest here, dedicated to the new Star Wars location Ahch-To.
According to Look & Find:
"Starkiller Base is vanquished, but Kylo Ren has escaped. Thanks to Rey and her friends, BB-8 brought Luke Skywalker’s coordinates back to the Resistance. On their behalf, Rey travels to the planet Ahch-To, hoping to enlist Luke’s help. While Rey persuades the last Jedi to join the Resistance, look for these rocky features…"
Doesn't Ahch-To look beautiful? Notice how many porgs there are! Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo has described the creatures as the #StarWars version of puffins, curious birds whose skittishness is overridden by their excitement over the island's new visitors. But the text is far more intriguing than the description...
Luke Skywalker Is The Last Jedi
Is the title of Episode VIII - The Last Jedi - plural or singular? Back when the title was first announced, we'd cast our eyes back to the opening crawl of The Force Awakens and noted that it referred to Luke as 'the last Jedi.' Matters were complicated back in February this year, though, when international translations rendered the title plural, not singular. So, for example, the French title is Les Derniers Jedi.
That looks to have been a simple mistake on the translators' part. This official book — overseen by Lucasfilm — is the first published content to suggest that the film's title refers to Luke alone. This is also backed by Director Rian Johnson, who noted:
"In my mind, it's singular. They say in The Force Awakens that he's gone on to find the last Jedi temple. Luke is the last Jedi."
But there's more; take a look at the precise wording.
"While Rey persuades the last Jedi to join the Resistance, look for these rocky features…"
More critical fans have complained that The Force Awakens was essentially a rinse-and-repeat of A New Hope. With a trailer teasing that Luke will train Rey, there had been concerns that The Last Jedi would continue this tradition, copying the major story beats from The Empire Strikes Back. However, this quote suggests that we'll soon see the Sequel Trilogy take a very different direction, one where Luke returns to action as a member of the Resistance. After all, it doesn't say Rey "tries to" persuade him...
If this is the case, then we can expect to see a whole lot of Luke Skywalker action by the end of The Last Jedi. The new information from Look & Find strongly suggests that most scenes from the trailer are drawn from early on in the movie. Although Luke will train Rey, presumably to be something very different to the Jedi, we'll then see Skywalker abandon his exile and return to the front lines — And this is something that will no doubt leave Snoke very concerned indeed...
