Encanto
Breaking generational curses and healing unhealthy historic trauma has never been so beautiful with vibrant colours, butterflies, and soulful songs! Disney’s Encanto emanates warmth, with both its exotic Colombian setting and magical story full of heartfelt emotional truth. The relatable messy family dynamic captivates the audience as the characters use the gifts which have been bestowed upon them, to blindly follow bloodline traditions, toe the line, and live up to the expectations of Mirabel’s grandmother and the Madrigals austere matriarch Alma. As the tale unfolds, so does this picture-perfect façade with granddaughter Mirabel questioning the unspoken pressure to be perfect and the toll it is taking on her sibling’s mental health.

Francis Bourgeois
Although I had fun, I spent a lot of the festive season trying not to overspend and de-rail my bank balance. Whilst at home mindlessly scrolling through my Instagram feed one evening, I spotted a shinning beacon amongst the dark tunnel of social media content in the form of Trainspotting influencer Francis Bourgeois. The name Francis Bourgeois is reportedly inspired by an 18th century royal court painter, which is a very fitting persona for this wonderfully whimsical, creative, and timeless character. Francis aka: ‘Tik Tok’s train guy’, has contagious enthusiasm and exceptional courage as he fully embraces his true self and shares his love for trains with his million strong (and ever-growing!) following. You really can’t help but smile when watching the clip of driver Gordon in the Freightliner Class 66 (66524) delivering the sweet train tones with seventy-three honks.

Hannah Stote
With 2021 upon us and this poignant new year dawning, Climate change is an ever-present modern-day calamity, which however much we try and avoid is undeniably toying with our collective conscience. It’s much like that dreaded trip to the dentist, we need to face the fear to treat the decay and minimise the damage. The fashion industry’s questionable ethics and environmental impact (soil, water, air usage) have been treated as much more than a fad by the public with an increase in second-hand clothing apps, online consumer questioning and brand boycotts. Style still has so much to offer, a sense of identity, connection, empowerment and a channel of creativity for a start. Consider the bond a sea of football supporters share in their teams’ kit colours or the power a heavy metal fan feels when donning a leather jacket. A more sustainable system is therefore vital and Bath Spa final year fashion student Hannah Stote transmuted this truth into her award-winning ‘A Sirens Call’ knitwear collection at London Graduate Fashion Week in June 2019.

Schitt’s Creek Style
2020’s ever looming lockdown situation had, for me, led to many more hours of free time at home tuned into Netflix. Luckily when feeling jaded from our daily dose of briefings I stumbled across Schitt’s Creek. The riches to rags story line, eccentric yet kind-hearted characters, authentic family dynamic and witty one-liners had me hooked from the first season. There was also a sense of support and community within the wayward town the family was forced to reside in. I felt we could all benefit from nurturing these simple virtues in real life to avoid apathy and best cope with the pandemic which we are all still facing.

Morag Myerscough
One of the perks of working at an Arts University is being amongst the ambience of constant creative energy and activity. Within this environment you can’t help but feel infused by imaginative upliftment. The campus also homes a gallery which last month featured the visually vibrant work of Designer/Artist Morag Myerscough. The ‘We Make Belonging’ exhibition stood out to me in the gallery pamphlet like a brightly coloured blissful rainbow amongst the turbulent times of today. I was intrigued to learn more about this wonderful woman who merged pop-art esq patterns and poetic prose to brighten up towns and to bridge a sense of belonging amongst visitors from all walks of life. ‘Make happy those who are near and those who are far will come’. I searched the internet for a more in-depth bio and came across a 2018 Design Indaba talk in which Morag shared her story from her bohemian background and family’s circus roots to her current journey of transforming schools, offices, hospitals and concrete jungles into play pits of techno-colour joy.
