An Unexpected Exchange Between Mother Gaia and Her Son(s)

Hi M🌍M!

I just wanted to acknowledge you for being one of the best planets in the universe! I’m super lucky to be one of your kids! I know sometimes it seems like we’re taking advantage of you, and I want you to know I really appreciate all you do for our (human) family.

That said, I just want to apologize on behalf of all your children; the human race. I realize a lot of us are coming across as pretty ungrateful! We can be a bit oblivious, selfish, uncooperative brats.

We don’t clean up after ourselves. We leave a big mess almost everywhere we go. We avoid facing ourselves, we forget our responsibilities, and we shirk on our chores. We treat you like we have other mothers we can run to when we don’t get our way. We’re always hungry for more, even when you are profoundly generous with us.

Although some of us are doing our best to have a harmonious and equally supportive relationship with you, it seems many of my brothers and sisters have become a bit of a pest! I totally understand why you’d want to shake us off or send us to another planet.

... That said, if you’re planning on any more seismic activities, would it be too much to ask if they could be as polite as the last couple of “earthqwaves” we felt rocking us here in L.A.?

A great big hug from your “favorite” son.

BeLOVEd Son (& Children),

Thank you for your loving acknowledgment. I appreciate you being aware of me. And thanks for giving me a chance to respond... I know you weren’t planning for me to, and I appreciate it.

Since I have your attention, I would actually like to mention a few things. Maybe you can pass it along to your brothers and sisters...

You know I do my best to let you (all) grow up in the way you see fit. I let you make your own choices (even when I don’t agree with them), and let you make your own mistakes (even when I know they lack foresight). I am your mother and I love you no matter what!

I know you love me too, and yet you seem to forget about me a lot, and you really take me for granted. You’ve also gotten into some really bad habits. You don’t look after yourself, or each other, very well, and subsequently, you don’t pay attention to me. You can be quite demanding, often asking for a lot more than I can provide. I do my best to be generous with each of you, but there’s only so much of me to go around.

I’m growing weary and tired. My climate isn’t what it used to be. Moreover, it continues to change because you keep messing with my (natural) resources! I’m not as young as I once was, and it takes me a lot longer to recover. I think sometimes you forget that I’m over 4 billion years old!

Since you’ve only been around a few centuries, you don’t seem to realize that I also need support.

While I love you unconditionally, I have to admit that I don’t approve of a lot of your lifestyle choices. If you keep “playing with fire,” one day you’re likely to get burned. And speaking of heat, I’m having more and more hot flashes because you’re burning more and more of my fossil fuels. My temperature is all out of whack, so I wish you’d look into and use more natural alternatives!

I won’t say you’re a "pest," but some of you have really been acting like entitled "brats." It’s important you realize that my resources are limited. I can’t always replenish them at the pace you want me to. Especially now that I’m older.

I’m doing my very best to be patient and not to react, but sometimes, I’m afraid I can’t help it.

If you could try a little harder to see things from my perspective and do what you can to help out around the planet, and really do what it takes to truly look after yourself and each other, which means also looking after the other being you share this global household with, that would really make your mother happy!!

In unconditional love,

Mom... a.k.a the Earth 🌎
