When fans learned that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford would return for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we assumed that they'd all be reunited on-screen. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be — Han Solo and Leia had scenes together, but Kylo Ren killed his father before Luke's whereabouts could be discovered. The original trinity would never appear all at once.

However, John Boyega may have just accidentally confirmed a reunion of the Skywalker siblings in The Last Jedi.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Boyega spoke about how the film gives Carrie Fisher an appropriate send-off, after the fan favorite suddenly passed away last year.

"I think the send-off is really cool. Even before she passed away, I'd see her in scenes and be like, 'This is really cool for both Carrie and Mark,' who are the last two original leads [alive in the franchise]."

It's important to note that Boyega name-dropped Hamill without any prompt from the interviewer, leading fans to believe that the Skywalker siblings were surely filmed together. Boyega continued, explaining how he felt about the entire process.

"I felt like they deserve more and more — they've been doing this for a while and have been the beating heart of something special, and I just feel like [The Last Jedi] pays homage to them in general. But unfortunately, now that she's passed, it does have a deeper meaning. I think the fans are going to appreciate that."

Could The Last Jedi Be The Perfect Send-off?

After the rebellion claimed their ultimate victory over in Return of the Jedi, Luke was tasked with raising the next generation of Jedi. However, things didn't go as planned when he recruited Leia and Han's son, Ben, as his Padawan. Mark Hamill had this to say in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his character's journey towards isolation:

[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character, And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. That’s the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi hierarchy, you know? It’s that guilt, that feeling that it’s his fault, that he didn’t detect the darkness in him until it was too late.

Luke poured everything into his training only for it to go horribly wrong. Stricken with grief and disbelief that he could miss the darkness in his nephew, Luke chose to find a secluded part of the universe and live out his days, much in the same way that Master Yoda did.

With Luke in isolation, he's seemingly chosen to abandon his friends and family with the belief that he's responsible for a disaster. Now that Luke appears to doubt whether the Jedi are the answer to the galaxy's problems, his sister will surely be one of the key motivations to train one last student in the ways of the Force.
