Did Marvel Just Hint At A New Star Wars Anthology Film Between Ep 3 and Ep 4?

If there is one thing that we can all agree on it's that there are certain villains that deserve their stories to be told. There is just something incredibly visceral about some villains that we've been introduced through literature, comics, television and film. We love to hate them or perhaps it's more a matter of empathy as we witness their fall into the darkness.

Darth Vader is a one of those iconic villains, and we knew that from the instant we met him in George Lucas' original trilogy of films. He earned the place upon the most recognizable villains despite only having a handful of moments on screen in the films.

With Vader's status among the most influential and powerful villains in the history of entertainment, it shouldn't be a surprise that he's earned an origin story developed by Marvel Comics... except that we've seen his origin story, haven't we?

Wasn't episodes I - III Vader's origin story?

Well sort of.. We all know that the, often ignored, prequel trilogy of films set up the story of what led Anakin Skywalker to transition from the simple life of a child on the desert planet of Tatooine to a life filled with corruption, darkness and absolute power. In the prequel trilogy we watched as Anakin went through a transformation of heart, mind and body eventually leading Anakin to fall to the power of the dark side of the Force and become more machine than man.

Yet through all the Star Wars films we never see how Darth Vader rose to be the seemingly unstoppable force in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the tyrannical leader in Episode 4: A New Hope. There is so much left of Vader's origin that we all want to know, and thanks to Marvel Comics we're going to get that story finally told.

#Marvel announced their intent to introduce a new comic line that tells the tale of the iconic villain beginning with Darth Vader #1 in June. Writer Charles Soule (Daredevil, She-Hulk, Death of Wolverine) and artist Giuseppe Camuncoli (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Superior Spider-Man) have given a little insight into what Star Wars fans are in line for. We'll see how Vader created his iconic red lightsaber and became the force-wielding powerhouse that strikes fear into even all those that crossed his path.

Soule explained how his comic would expand on the character in this way during an interview with IGN:

"This is more someone who isn't sure what's going to happen to him. He doesn't know if he's going to be alive in two weeks or 40 years. He doesn't know what his day to day is going to look like and he doesn't know what his purpose is. So it's about trying to understand that, what life without Padme is like, and just kind of understand what it means to be a Sith lord, because all this stuff is new to him. And really exploring the Dark Side in an open way where he doesn't have to be ashamed, doesn't have to hide from the Jedi, can really go deep into it."

Could Marvel Marvel be setting the stage for the yet-announced anthology film?

The short answer is, 'we don't know' and that's not really the answer that fans want to hear, but the fact that Marvel is developing a comic series to depict the origin of Darth Vader gives hope to legions of fans who want to know what happened between Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith and Episode 4: A New Hope.

With the success of the sequel trilogy and Rogue One, #Disney would be crazy to not consider the potential of another set of films based around the yet-to-be explored new cannon of the Star Wars universe. Even though the rumors elude to the last #StarWarsAnthology film being based on Boba Fett, I feel that Vader would be a more compelling story to tell.

A #DarthVader film in the anthology trilogy could expose the 20 years that passed while Vader was coming into the understanding of who he is. When we left him in Revenge of the Sith he was broken and burned, half-man/half-machine still in pain over the loss of Padme. The Vader story could be focused around how Obi-Wan hid the children from Vader, and Vader's unending quest to rid the galaxy of the Jedi.

I'm not sure about you, but that's definitely a story worth reading in the comics, but I also believe that it's worth transitioning to the big screen. Through out his time with the Dark Side, he never fully embraced it and it was thanks to his own son that his heart was finally freed from the pain and suffering of his own emotions.
