Doctor Who has been away from our screens for almost a year now, as BBC decided not to show a complete series this year due to all the sporting events. However, the cast and crew were at the New York Comic Con today and have revealed some exciting news following the news panel.

The Christmas Special, which will air on BBC One, will team up with an all new comic book superhero in New York for an epic heroic special written by the head writer, Steven Moffat. The confirmed title for the 2016 special is "The Return of Doctor Mysterio."

A deadly alien threat stumbles across New York and the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) has no option but to join forces with an investigative journalist (Charity Wakefield) and an exciting-looking superhero, who will be played by Justin Chatwin. Will they stop the alien threat and save the day?

“I’ve always loved superheroes, and this Christmas 'Doctor Who' dives into that world. My favorite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent.” — Steven Moffat

Matt Lucas will be returning in the Christmas special as his lovable and funny character Nardole, who was beheaded last Christmas. What is your theory on how he is back? Matt Lucas will be joined by Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman for the comic special.

Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black, War of the Worlds), who plays Grant in the special, said:

“Working with the amazing people at 'Doctor Who' has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I’ve ever had the pleasure of being involved with.”

During Comic Con, they released an exciting teaser for the Christmas special that shows a lot of action already and possibly some familiar faces? For now, you can catch the Doctor back on screen in the upcoming BBC Three Doctor Who spin-off series called Class, which airs on October 22nd.
