Does 'The Last Jedi' Need a Rewrite?

No. No it doesn't.

Spoilers but it's been like seven fucking months so how have you not seen spoilers?

If you have been on Twitter the last couple days, you may have noticed a lot of talk from new and old Star Wars fans alike thanks to a fundraiser going around the fandom to remake Episode 8: The Last Jedi.

If you remember, the film's release last year stirred a lot of controversy with some people loving the film and others absolutely hating it.

Whether it was about the multiple storylines, the surprising possible romance blooming between Rey and Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), Luke Skywalker's characterization, or the Porgs; it seemed everyone had something to say about something revolving the film.

Since the release of the film, the director, Rian Johnson has been under heat thanks to many fans of the original trilogy which seemed to especially hate The Last Jedi*. Many have called for it to be thrown out of canon and one fan has decided to try to do exactly that.

The account in question is one twitter account "Remake The Last Jedi" (fucking clever amirite?) claimed they found producers willing to give $200 million to remake the film.

Twitter, as it usually does, went fucking bananas with this.

Of course, Rian Johnson, being the troll he often is, quoted the tweet saying, "Please please please please pleeeeeeeaaaase please actually happen please please please please please πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»"

Ever since people are joking about what they would do under the hashtag #TheLastJediRemakeIdeas. Some of my favorites

- Queer Eye for the Straight Jedi (from @gigirules7)

- Just don't (from @jswilliams1962)

- Two words: Rick Moranis (from @RacerX393)

- A family therapy session (from @KatieTierneyH)

- Rey's real name is Rey Rey Binks. She's the daughter of Jar Jar (from @Brrrrraaaiiins)

That is the side of the Star Wars fandom that I love. The side that makes jokes and accepts things happened even if they necessarily like said things. But there are many places that are honestly, gross as hell. Like anything that has been around for that many years, the fan base has some ugly parts that everyone hates but will never go away.

This is part of it, all jokes aside. I'm not saying that you have to like everything in the canon but just because you don't like something doesn't mean you get to demand it to change.

Movies, television shows, books, etc are for enjoyment but not made to satisfy your every whim. First and foremost, characters and worlds are the property of the creator and with that being said, they get to do what they want with it. It's theirs.

If you really wanted something else to happen, there are several ways to go about it.

One, just leave it alone. If you are so mad because of a single thing, you hate an entire franchise, don't support it. Don't watch the next film. Just leave it alone.

Two, fan fiction is a thing. While the world will always belong to the character, fan fiction is still a totally acceptable thing. If you hate it that much, open a google doc and rewrite it to please your little heart.

Personally, as someone who watched the prequel and original trilogy as a child and saw The Force Awakens her freshman year of high school, I rather liked The Last Jedi. Not only was the film exceptionally pretty, I actually liked the tangle of plot lines because it gave more screentime to more characters than previous films had done before. I liked how it showed how others, such as Rose Tico, are affected by the main character's actions.

Also, I am a total slut for character redemption arcs (sorry not sorry).

*Author's Note: I am not saying that every fan of the original Star Wars trilogy hated the film.
