How The Earth Came To Be

M. L. Lupine

In the beginning, five Gods and four Goddesses wanted something to do so they assigned each other jobs. One Goddess, Terra, was in charge of making the foundation of a planet and so She made a giant sphere made of soil. She shaped valleys and mountains with Her hands and added vegetation. She placed stone and other materials under the soil. She called her creation "Earth." A God, Waves, thought there should be some contrast with the soil and covered vast amounts with water, rivers and lakes, bays and oceans.

Another Goddess, Luna, then added animals to the Earth and taught them how to survive. She found great joy creating the animals and gave some funny physical characteristics. A different God, Lyfe, thought the animals should also have contrast and created men and women. The men and women began eating some of Terra's vegetation and this pleased Her but She warned them to balance how much they took from the Earth and how much they gave. The people heeded Her warning and began replanting the wheat, sugar, chocolate and other plants. Lyfe's people scattered the Earth and began different cultures. This is why in some cultures, people don't place their elbows on the table, why hands are shook or people bow towards someone to welcome them and why it's rude to pass gas.

A different God, Sol, thought something was still missing and asked Luna what She thought. Luna agreed and together they created the sky, the day and the night, the stars, the sun, and the moon. Sol wanted control of the sky, the day, and the sun. Luna agreed and added the night, the stars, and the moon to Her responsibilities. A God called Amser then created time and Lyfe's people rejoiced. The people began to bore with all the spare time and asked the Gods for something to do. A Goddess named Alphonsine answered their request and created and taught them how to play games like basketball, cards and hop scotch. She then told the people to dig underground and use some of the resources Terra had made for them. This pleased Terra.

There was still one God, Ailesh, the father of the other Gods and Goddesses who still had nothing to do. So He created weather, temperature, and seasons. Lyfe's people and Luna's animals rejoiced. One of Luna's wolves, Darrah, fell in love with Luna and She fell for him. So She asked Lyfe's to turn him into a man, and Lyfe agreed. Luna and Darrah had a daughter, Melodi. The child's beauty angered Hadara, the Goddess charged with educating the people and the most beautiful Goddess, who believed the child to be more beautiful than She. So Hadara cursed Melodi with killing the people, animals, and plants as time went on. That is how the Earth came to be.
