Jodie Whittaker stands proud, looking towards the future!

In July 2017, Jodie Whittaker was unveiled to the world as the first female incarnation of TV's beloved time-travelling hero. This is no news to most people nowadays, as Whittaker has quickly embedded herself into the 'Whovian' fan-base with this sudden and defiant change to the show. However, although the Thirteenth Doctor has become cemented with such speed ahead of her full-series debut in October 2018, a crack has emerged between fans of the show. Whilst a vast majority of viewers have welcomed the new Doctor with open arms, ready to help her embrace the weird wonders of time and space, other individuals struggled to grasp this reformed concept - leading to social media uproars and the occasional outburst of hateful comments. Last year's reveal has truly created a new dawn for fans both supportive and against the casting of Jodie Whittaker. In lieu of such times, here is how this will potentially lead to a revolutionary new direction for the longest running science-fiction show in the world...

Infinitely New Possibilities

'Doctor Who' is a show which is consistently evolving, once quoted by the Second Doctor himself it is a format where "life depends on change and renewal." This new era heralds not just a rejuvenation of the character, but a reinvention of the show's format. With new show-runner Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch, Torchwood) at the helm, it is almost certain that viewers can expect a different approach to the series layout than what was previously seen under the jurisdiction of Steven Moffat. We've already seen the Doctor's new outfit, pictured briefly above, and had our first glimpses at the new TARDIS exterior. But what abeyant new features could we still anticipate in the last few months before the premiere of Series 11? The close-kept secrets regarding the new stories spark an exciting period for the fan-base, as it leaves eager 'Whovians' keen to discover the new adventures and twists even more.

Not only this, but fans have been told to expect exciting new characters, the return of foes old and new and a sensational new music composer. This is certainly a time to invest in the show and engage with it's major new changes!

Nonetheless, this aforementioned revolutionary turn for 'Doctor Who' brings with it some negative kickbacks...

A Fan-Base Divided

As previously mentioned in the discussion, social media has been a strong threshold for disappointed, and even angered fans to ventilate their distressing thoughts towards a show they feel is "unfamiliar" with a lead who is "not their Doctor." The responses to such posts has been met by equal disruption from fans supporting the change, standing their ground to defend what they believe will mark an excellent time. Do not be confused, nevertheless, as the divisions between fans is not the issue. Opinions are equally entitled to all sides, as they should be. The disadvantage lies in the hearts of those who do not wish to embrace Whittaker's take on the Doctor. The consequence ultimately being that their interest in the show will dither. This, in ones personal opinion, is an upsetting fallout as some generations of fans feel they can no longer invest their time or effort into supporting the show they once loved.

"The more I save it the more it needs saving. It's a treadmill, yes?" - The Twelfth Doctor, Twice Upon a Time (2017)

To formulate some sort of conclusion from all this, it must be equally considered that, whilst 'Doctor Who' prepares to make a leap which will deliver enticing new realms, explore vast and exciting storylines and bear the performance of the first female Doctor, the dismay of others must be respected in a professional manner. It would seem silly to create such uproar, hatred and negative diversity over what is simply another variation of the same theme, wouldn't it?

Nonetheless, she is the Doctor, whether you like it... or not.
