"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" Movie Review

The long-running dino franchise makes a refreshing and welcomed pivot.

I remember June 1993 quite well. I was ten years old, school was days away from culmination for the year, and the highly anticipated and historic movie, Jurassic Park, was finally let out of its cage to dominate the summer box office. Back then, seeing the lifelike dinosaurs with the latest and greatest CGI technology was a HUGE deal and it was terrifying to kids because it looked so real. In 2018, great CGI is pretty commonplace in movies and we do not really get to experience that "wow factor" we all once did back in 1993 seeing the first huge dinosaur to grace the massive screen. Sure, CGI today is impressive and better than ever but, it will never be that gigantic leap forward experience like Jurassic Park's offering in 1993.

25 years and five movies later, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has been released to deliver the next step in the Jurassic storyline. Instead of using the now tired and overused trope of "We made a theme park with dinosaurs, what could possibly go wrong?" Fallen Kingdom breaks the mould and makes the story about rescuing the dinosaurs. Isla Nubar has an active volcano that has erupted and a choice must be made whether to save the dinosaurs or to just let them perish naturally by lava. Fallen Kingdom in a way humanizes the dinos and even gives them a grassroots "human rights" campaign to help save them for the future. It is a bit silly and extremely far fetched, but you should just buy into it because the ride that follows the silly story is a fun one. Isabella Sermon, who plays Maisie Lockwood, discovers the truth of what is going on about the dinosaurs and she does whatever it takes with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard to make things right for the dinosaurs.

Most of the cast of 2015's Jurassic World is back. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard both return to reprise their roles of Owen Grady and Claire Dearing respectively. Jeff Goldblum has maaaaaaaybe six minutes of total screen time as Ian Malcom. They all do a pretty good job with the newcomers Isabella Sermon, Justice Smith, and Daniella Pineda.

Most of Fallen Kingdom was filmed in Hawaii and it helped provide some beautiful shots in the movie. From the volcanic eruption to the underwater scenes with volcanic debris, it was a treat for the eye. The cinematography was done quite well too, as you will be gifted with a few clever no cut scenes that are action packed and thrilling! There were quite a few youngsters at my showing and some of the scenes were possibly too intense for their liking and it caused them to scream and cry. There is a scene in Fallen Kingdom that harkens back to the terrifying kitchen scene in Jurassic Park. It was quite well done. The sound was excellent as things can get pretty hairy and loud. You heard every dino roar with clarity and you heard every thundering explosion—sometimes even felt it in your seat!

Going to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a no brainer. It will give you edge of your seat thrills and take you to a wonderful world where humans aren't really in control. Will you be wowed like you were back in 1993? No, but you will have a great time with your friends taking in a movie that has changed its course for the better dealing with a storyline that could possibly get even crazier. Be sure to stay for after the credits for a teaser of what is going to happen next in the franchise. It is well worth your time. Grab some popcorn and enjoy Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom!
