We may celebrate the New Year on January 1st, but did you know that wasn’t always the case? Really, January 1st is an arbitrary date in the middle of Capricorn season. The New Year was once celebrated in the month of March (a month named after Roman War season; also, a month that corresponds with the Sun’s entrance into Aries, a sign ruled by Mars). Think about it: Why is December the 12th month? Shouldn’t it be the 10th? Why is October the 10th month? Shouldn’t it be the 8th? Well, it was once, until a new calendar was formed by Julius Caesar on January 1, 45 (only to be replaced later by our current Gregorian calendar).

Astrologers *still* celebrate the New Year on March 20th/21st—the Vernal Equinox, or first day of spring—when the Sun leaves Pisces and enters the first degree of Aries (traditionally, the first sign of the zodiac) to complete another round of the zodiac cycle.

This year’s Vernal Equinox is a very special one, as there will be a Full Moon on that very same day!

On Wednesday, March 20th, at 9:42 PM, there will be a Full Moon at 00’09 degrees Libra. Here’s what you can expect.

What is a Full Moon?

Throughout history, a Full Moon has been known to cause unexpected events and strange behavior. In fact, the word "lunatic" comes from the word "luna," meaning moon.

A Full Moon occurs when the Sun is opposite the Moon, representing the peak or climax of the lunar cycle. Because the two luminaries are in opposition to one another, Full Moons are known to highlight any opposing forces or polarities in your life, such as the balance between self and the other, the balance between the masculine and feminine, and the balance between work and home.

Full Moons are also a good time to reflect on where you are in life and where you are headed. While the period between the New Moon and the Full Moon is a time for setting (and achieving) goals, the period between the Full Moon and the next New Moon is a time for letting go. Full Moons can also bring about climactic events and awaken us to powerful truths and realizations. The effects of a Full Moon usually last about two weeks, until the new New Moon comes along and starts a new cycle.

I suggest looking at where Libra and Aries fall in your natal chart to see how this Full Moon will affect you personally. I also suggest you look back to any goals or intentions you set around the March 6th New Moon in Pisces, for they should be coming into fruition at this time. It might also be helpful to look back six months ago to any intentions or goals you set around the October 8th New Moon in Libra, for they could also be coming into fruition.

Full Moon in Libra

The Full Moon in Libra highlights the balance between self and the other, masculinity (Sun in Aries is ruled by Mars) and femininity (Moon in Libra is ruled by Venus), and war and peace.

It's worth saying that this Full Moon at 00'09 degrees Libra takes place at a critical degree. A planet at the first degree of any sign is very powerful and represents the sign in its purest form.

The Sun in Aries represents our most wildest, untamed, animalistic selves. It represents our own egos in their purest, most childlike form. Aries is the baby of the zodiac, the first. The first sign, heralding the season of Spring, Aries is a starter, a pioneer, a trailblazer. Aries is brave and takes the riskiest first moves so everyone else knows it is safe to follow. Aries likes to think of itself as an alpha, and doesn't mind getting into fights with others to prove this fact whenever anyone gets in the way of what they're after, but this often leads Aries into trouble—trouble that may not be so worth it. Aries can be impulsive and naive, like children, and its biggest lesson is to learn which battles are truly worth fighting for. The Sun at 00'09 degrees Aries represents our egos, because really, we are all children and the Earth is our school.

Libra, on the other hand, is all about balance. Libra gives us the realization that other people exist. No, it isn't "all about me" and other people don't exist to appease you. Other people actually exist and they have thoughts, feelings, and experiences of their own just like we do! This realization is a big one. Libra is the sign of the scales and represents justice, equality, tolerance, and all of the other values we need in order to create and keep a civilized society going. Talk about civilization: Libra even rules the arts! Libra reminds us to consider the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of others, and to have greater concern for the world around us. Who even are "we" outside of our interactions with other people? If Earth is our school, other people are our biggest teachers. Other people often teach us more about ourselves. It's best to treat others how we want to be treated—do good onto others and they shall likely do good onto you—because we are all interdependent. The more we fight, the more people we anger, and more wars follow; and the kinder we are, the more people we make happy, and more love follows. To create a better world, we must start with ourselves and how we treat the people around us. Break the cycle and create a new one.

This doesn't mean that you should be a doormat and care for others at the expense of yourself. That wild Aries energy has its purpose and you never want to lose it completely. What you want is a balance, a balance between that and civil, mature, and intelligent Libra energy. Follow your own path and stand up for yourself (and others!) when needed, but also have consideration for others, pick your battles wisely, and avoid unnecessary conflict.

Other Aspects

While the Full Moon makes no significant aspects, it will be accompanied by a few major aspects between other planets that same day.

Retrograde Mercury in Pisces, conjunction to Neptune in Pisces and sextile to Saturn in Capricorn, brings us a good balance of imagination and clear-headed judgement. We'll be in the right frame of mind to weigh our options clearly (Saturn exalts Libra!) before making our dreams a reality.

Meanwhile, Mars in Taurus trine Saturn and Pluto will help strengthen our will and increase ambition and stamina. It's a good aspect for sports, business, and also in the bedroom.

Venus in Aquarius sextile Jupiter in Sagittarius by less than one degree will bring good luck to our love lives and help us forge harmonious bonds.

Most importantly, however, Mars at 23 degrees Taurus will be making a square to Venus at 23 degrees Aquarius. This is important, as Mars rules our Sun at zero degrees Aries, and Venus rules our Full Moon at zero degrees Libra. A square brings conflict. This aspect could bring loneliness, tension, and sexual frustration, or it could manifest as a battle between the two sexes, with men (Mars) wanting tradition (Taurus), and women (Venus) wanting independence and more equal rights (Aquarius). Keeping in line with the themes of this Full Moon, we may also have trouble finding a balance between Aries and Libra, self and the other, and war and peace. But with Mars in Taurus, a sign ruled by Venus, we can at least know that love wins.
