A long time ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...
It is a time of joy and excitement for comic book readers, as for a year #Marvel Comics have been publishing adventures set during and between the epic #StarWars movies. For Marvel, Star Wars has been a critical and sales success, leaping straight into the top sellers and ending the year with a climactic crossover.
But now, with the blockbuster release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Marvel Comics have a whole new era opened up to them...
The Poe Dameron comic
Written by Charles Soule ('Star Wars: Lando', 'Uncanny Inhumans', 'Death of Wolverine'), and with art from the ever-popular Phil Noto ('Star Wars: Chewbacca', 'X-Men Origins', 'Black Widow'), the Poe Dameron series will flesh out the greatest pilot of the galaxy!
Soule's plan will be to tell the story of the buildup to Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens, with Poe leading a mission to discover the location of Luke Skywalker. He's been working on the series for the last six months, and will base the concepts heavily off of the heftiest blockbuster of all time.
What other opportunities could Marvel play on?
Until now, Marvel have been walking a well-trodden path; their comics have featured stories of Luke Skywalker's training, of Lando's pre-Empire Strikes Back adventures, and have even revisited Obi-Wan Kenobi's exile on Tatooine. Fans of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe have found it all strangely familiar.
But the release of #StarWarsTheForceAwakens changes everything. Lucasfilm are unlikely to want too many comics set before the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII, so we're unlikely to see the aftermath of the movie just yet. But the time-period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens is now wide open!
It's a time-period Marvel have already dabbled with, particularly with 'Shattered Empire', the official comic book lead-in to The Force Awakens, featuring Poe's parents.
Even 'Shattered Empire' was set immediately after Return of the Jedi, though. Now Marvel can tell the tales of how life changed for the Galaxy Far, Far Away.
We can expect Marvel to continue their current strategy, with short miniseries that explore the lives of specific characters. We're unlikely to see much page-time for Rey - she's simply growing up on Jakku. But we're far more likely to see comics based on General Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker.
I'm expecting Marvel to flesh out the backstory hinted at in The Force Awakens; to show the rise of the First Order, to show Kylo Ren's seduction to the Dark Side, and perhaps even the fall of the Jedi Order; and to give us more adventures of Han Solo, as Han returns to what he was best at.
'Poe Dameron' is just the start. May the Force be with Marvel!
