We don't like change. Who does? But, when it comes to Doctor Who, we all have to face the biggest change there can possibly be – regeneration. The iconic Time Lord from Gallifrey has the ability to regenerate and repair his body when he's dying or seriously injured. Majority of the time, we see the Doctor regenerate when he is on the edge of death and his body needs immediate attention. This ends up in the Doctor forcing himself to change his looks, face and personality.

Since Doctor Who was revived in 2005, we've seen the Doctor change his face three times. Out of the three major regenerations, it's been made clear that David Tennant's Tenth Doctor regeneration in 2010 is the most emotional so far. However, that is about to change as Peter Capaldi's is expected to be even more of a tear-jerker.

Peter Capaldi announced he will bow out of Doctor Who this Christmas, where he will hand over the TARDIS key to the incoming Doctor — Jodie Whittaker, the show's first ever female Doctor.

Christmas is meant to be full of happiness and joyful events. But actress Pearl Mackie, who plays companion Bill Potts, has ensured fans that Capaldi's regeneration is extremely emotional to watch. Mackie, who will fully depart the long-running series this Christmas as well, has spoken to Radiotimes.com and has warned us that a box of tissues will be required when watching the festive episode. In an interview, Mackie said:

"I'd say have a box of tissues close at hand. As to be expected: it's Peter's last episode as the Doctor and my last episode as well. There’s new beginnings — you’ve got new beginnings with [next Doctor] Jodie Whittaker — it’s a great adventure with two Doctors, it’s going to be very exciting, it’s going to be a lovely episode.”

Fans saw Capaldi's incarnation of the Doctor begin his regeneration process in the Season 10 finale back in July. However, fans witnessed the Doctor forcing himself not to change his face this time. Just as the Twelfth Doctor was about to regenerate completely, he was interrupted by his first incarnation, causing the Twelfth Doctor to postpone his regeneration for the time being to see who this mystery man was emerging out of the fog.

With details about this year's Christmas Special starting to be revealed as time goes on, fans have been promised that the Christmas themed episode this year will be a tale of hope and redemption. The Twelfth Doctor will unite with his first incarnation on an epic adventure before the Twelfth Doctor's time is finally up. Outgoing showrunner, Steven Moffat, said this in an interview:

"Whereas, Christmas Day isn't a great day to kill off a children's favourite. It can be sad — and it is — but to actually kill off lovely old Doctor Who is not what you want to see on Christmas Day. So, it will be a tale of redemption and hope, and deciding to carry on, instead of being a tale of the Doctor falling."

With Moffat revving up the hype for the Christmas Special, it has been confirmed in the trailer that Pearl Mackie will be making one final return to Doctor Who this Christmas where she reunites with her best friend for one final adventure before parting ways again. Afterall, she didn't get to say goodbye to the Doctor properly when she left in Season 10. So now seems to be a perfect time.

Capaldi's regeneration will take place in the final minutes of the special where Jodie Whittaker will make her long-anticipated arrival to the show. The question is, are you sad to see Peter Capaldi leave Doctor Who?
