'Ready Player One' Contains Amazing Nostalgia and Fun Story

Bring on the nostalgia.

Spielberg is back, and he has a brand new movie out called Ready Player One. The film is based off of the novel by Ernest Cline, and it's been getting talked about everywhere.

I watched the movie today, and I wanted to give the movie a little review.

Here we go!

So, I'll be the first to admit that I only wanted to watch this movie because I saw the DeLorean time machine in the trailers.

I'm a huge Back to the Future nerd, by the way.

And when the DeLorean first showed up on screen, I got a little emotional. If you love BTTF, you're gonna like the way the DeLorean is used in this film. The only thing we don't get to see, though, is a time travel trip to the past.

But let's get into the film: Wade Watts (portrayed by Tye Sheridan) is able to enter the OASIS to escape reality. His avatar is Parzival, and he, along with many others, is on a quest to find the easter eggs needed to gain control over the OASIS.

Meanwhile, Wade falls in love with an avatar named Art3mis (portrayed by Olivia Cooke), and has to team up with his OASIS best friend, Aech (portrayed by Lena Waithe) among others to stop a corporation called IOI from gaining full control over the OASIS.

First, we need to get into the visual effects of the film.

When you enter the OASIS, it truly feels like you're entering a brand new virtual world. The visual effects inside the OASIS are absolutely amazing, and it can become difficult to discern which parts of the film are done with CGI and which are done with live-action.

It truly is breathtaking. And as for the story, the film keeps you entertained with an understandable story that keeps you rooting for the main characters.

Besides the DeLorean, we have other pop culture references including a cameo appearance by Chucky, the Iron Giant, King Kong, a Terminator 2 thumbs-up, a Star Wars lightsaber, and a large number of scenes dedicated to The Shining.

You also have the time-traveling "Zemeckis Cube," a Mayor Goldie Wilson poster, and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance from Freddy Kreuger. If you like 70s and 80s nostalgia, you should try to find as many easter eggs as you can in this film, because there are a s**t-load of them all over the screen.

As for the acting performances, every single one of them is perfect. In particular, I enjoyed the performances of Sheridan, Cooke, Waithe, and Mark Rylance as the mysterious former OASIS owner, James Halliday.

T.J. Miller also voices i-R0k, a neurotic comic relief henchman that's probably his best voice acting role since The Emoji Movie. Ha ha, just kidding. That movie sucked. But Miller was actually good in this movie.

The film also contained a very entertaining climax, which improved the film a lot. And most of the characters were developed very well, and overall, it was a film made very well done.

Now, if you're a fan of the book, and you wanted this movie to be very similar to the book, it's not. For example, Blade Runner's integral role in the book was cut due to the simultaneous production of Blade Runner 2049.

Blade Runner was replaced with The Shining, and since the rights to Ultraman were under legal dispute, Ultraman's role was replaced with the Iron Giant.

So, if you're a book purist, you may either like the film on its own, or not like it due to how much was changed.

Would I recommend this movie? Definitely. It's packed with awesome visuals, a great story, and may be one of the most memorable movies of 2018.

My rating: 8/10. Go watch Ready Player One! In theaters now.
