This New Year' starts out with a bang! Our first week of 2019, and we already have a Solar Eclipse. This partial New Moon Solar Eclipse will take place on Saturday, January 5th at 15'25 degrees Capricorn. Here's what you can expect.

What is a Solar Eclipse?

A Solar Eclipse happens when the Moon is caught between the Earth and the Sun, blocking off sunlight. It's as if the Sun has disappeared (or partially disappeared, anyway)! A Solar Eclipse always coincides with the New Moon (and a Lunar Eclipse always coincides with the Full Moon). A regular New Moon is the first phase of the lunar cycle, when the Moon is conjunct the Sun. New Moons in general are a good time for new beginnings and fresh starts, kind of like on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day when we plan our resolutions. A Solar Eclipse is in effect like a REALLY strong New Moon. Often, a Solar Eclipse will coincide with major life events, such as a marriage, a promotion or a baby being born, and it's effects will last long after the end of the lunar cycle. While the effects of a regular New Moon will last about 28 days, the effects of a Solar Eclipse will last for about six months, when another eclipse occurs in the opposite sign.

Solar Eclipses are here to help us evolve, to wake us up from out of our rut and make important changes to our lives. They will often bring sudden and surprising changes to your life, and shocking revelations and realizations of truth. These changes and revelations are far more dramatic and life changing than a regular New Moon but they're usually for the better. Life will feel as if moving at a rapid speed and you'll accomplish things much sooner than you thought you would. If a Solar Eclipse brings something to an end, it is often so that something new can begin.

It's always important to note that eclipses always occur when the Sun is near the orbit of one of the two nodes. The North Node and South Node are lunar points representing our karma. They are always in opposite signs from one another. The North Node represents where we are going, our purpose, what we came here to master. The South Node represents our karma and past lives, what we're familiar with and need to let go of. This is what makes an eclipse such a crucial time for evolution and spiritual growth.

Solar Eclipse in Capricorn

January 2019's New Moon Solar Eclipse will take place at 15 degrees, Capricorn, the sign of the goat.

As a cardinal earth sign, Capricorn is a natural born leader and businessman. Just as a goat climbs up the mountain, Capricorn seeks to climb up to the top of the social and/or corporate ladder. It rules the 10th house, or Midheaven (MC), the highest point of the chart, representing both your career and how you appear in the public sphere. As an earth sign, Capricorn is rooted in the material world, giving people with Capricorn placements a very practical down-to-earth frame of mind. Ruled by the planet Saturn (Father Time), the sign of Capricorn is all about tradition and all things ancient. Overall, it is a sign of structure, order, and hierarchy.

The eclipse will bring about new beginnings and fresh starts in our careers and professional lives. If you were thinking of starting a business, now is a good time. It's also a good time to do something different to advance yourself, like going back to school or getting yourself started in a totally different field! With the New Moon sextile Neptune by only one degree, it is a good time to use your imagination to come up with new ideas of how to make money or advance yourself socially. An idea for a new project or business opportunity may come to you in a dream! The New Moon will also be conjunct Capricorn's very own ruler, Saturn, which will help give us the practical outlook needed to turn out dreams into a reality.

Since this is a South Node Eclipse, however, I also believe there is a "dark side," to it, or shall I say, a more political side. The South Node is all about karma and what we are meant to outgrow. With the South Node in a sign ruling over business, religion and politics, I think this Solar Eclipse will help do away with outdated social institutions. The eclipse is wedged between two powerful planets, Saturn at 11 degrees and Pluto at 20 degrees. Both of these planets are, in their own way, representative of the elite, the powers that be, those who are in control (think plutocracy). I do not believe this eclipse is favorable to them. Named after the god of the underworld, Pluto also rules over death and destruction, but also rebirth, meaning we may undergo a destruction of the old system to make way for a new one. Basically, what I'm saying is this Solar Eclipse could spark a revolution, a destruction of the old society, to make room for a new one based on positive Neptunian values of universal love and compassion.

Eclipses are known to affect society at a mass scale, rather than simply affecting us at an individual level, the way a regular New Moon would. But remember, the personal is political. Any big events that happen will likely end up affecting many of us at an individual level as well.

Eclipses are known to affect everybody, but check your natal chart to see if you have any personal planets or angles (ASC, IC, DSC or MC) between roughly 10 and 21 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. People with these placements will be especially effected. You may also be significantly affected if you have any personal planets or angles between 13 and 17 degrees of Taurus or Virgo, and possibly, Pisces and Scorpio. People with these placements will experience this transit in a more positive, and in the case of the latter two, subtler way. How it will affect you will depend on the house Capricorn sits in your birth chart, and in the case of angles or personal planets, which planets are effected.

The events brought on by the eclipse may not happen right away. The energies surrounding an eclipse are generally effective for up to six months. This is because eclipses come in seasons, of two or three consecutive eclipses, that happen twice a year.

The current eclipse season will include tomorrow's partial Solar Eclipse, which will be visible from parts of East Asia and Siberia, and a total Lunar Eclipse in Leo on January 20th or 21st. Expect similar themes to repeat itself later in the month (and expect an article on the next eclipse within the next two weeks - I'll try to be faster with these articles, I promise!). Themes relating to the Cancer Full Moon which happened on the Winter Solstice may also resurface.

If you are the type of person who engages in New Moon rituals, it may help to focus on what kind of society you'd like for this world, as well as what you want for yourself.

This transit is all about helping you manifest your dreams into a reality. Use it wisely!
