Return of the Tenth: 'Doctor Who' Is A 'Fond Thing To Return To' Says David Tennant

Doctor Who first aired on November 23rd, 1963 and has remained a part of millions of people's lives. Whether you're a fan of the sci-fi series, or you're part of the cast and crew, it has that something special about it that latches on tightly to you.

Of course, being part of the cast is something you'll never forget, especially if you're cast to play the iconic Time Lord - The Doctor himself. David Tennant portrayed the Tenth Doctor from 2005 until 2010, where he handed over the TARDIS key to Matt Smith.

Since his departure, Tennant has returned as the quirky Tenth Doctor in a number ways. Some of which include onscreen and via audio stories. Back in 2013, Doctor Who celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a special feature length episode - 'The Day of the Doctor.'Tennant accepted the offer to return in this special episode and teamed up with Smith for an epic adventure. Now Tennant is back again, but this time he's fighting more adventures with his first companion Rose Tyler.

'The Tenth Doctor Adventures' Returns!

Tennant is no stranger to the Big Finish audio productions as he has completed a series in the past, where he was joined by past companion actress Catherine Tate in The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 1. Volume 2 of the same series unfortunately doesn't see Tate return for another series of adventures. Instead, Piper steps back into the wonderful world of Doctor Who to relive 2006 and travel through time and space with her loving Tenth Doctor. This series will be the Piper's debut series with Big Finish Productions.

Jason Haigh-Ellery, who is an executive producer for Big Finish said getting David and Billie back together was definitely on his bucket list. Continuing on his statement, Haigh-Ellery said:

"Two wonderful actors who created an era of Doctor Who which is so fondly remembered and brought a different aspect of the relationship between the Doctor and his companion to the fore – love, both platonic and unrequited. It's great to have the Tenth Doctor and Rose back again!"

Big Finish Productions and Doctor Who fans may seem very pleased about this exciting new, but how does Tennant feel about flying the TARDIS for another series of adventures?

Doctor Who Is 'A Fond Thing To Return To'

In the latest edition of the Doctor Who Magazine, Tennant has revealed that reprising his role as the Doctor is 'always a very fond thing to return to' and that Doctor Who itself is a 'happy place to be.' Speaking in an interview with DWM, Tennant explained his thoughts by saying:

I always feel fond towards it. I always feel like it's a happy place to be. It's always a very fond thing to return to, the world of Doctor Who. It's always very welcoming, and friendly, and familiar.

Running through his life like 'a stick of rock', Tennant explains that when you leave the main show, you can never escape it as it's a role that will remain with you for the rest of your life.

"I suppose I don't feel detached enough from it to feel sentimental, really. Maybe if I'd been completely banished from it for 10 years? But of course it never quite goes away, does it?"

Whether you're the Doctor for one season or for three seasons, it's an achievement in your life. Primarily because you become a role model to fans as they're desperate to start cosplaying as your Doctor. However, when playing the Doctor, you're also a role model to actors and actresses who aspire to become the Time Lord. You're there showing them how it's done and raising the standards, giving them a challenge to match that standard. Obviously, every actor in the revived era has matched or gone above that standard and have become fan-favorites.

Final Thoughts

Piper makes her long awaited return to Doctor Who via Big Finish this November when she joins Tennant in The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 2. The series will be made up of three hour-long full-cast audio adventures.

Rose's mum Jackie Tyler (Camille Coduri) will also be returning within this series as it has been revealed she will feature in episode one called 'Attack of the Zaross.'
