'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

A True Masterpiece

OK, look, I understand people are entitled to their opinions, but this one baffles me. I left Star Wars: The Last Jedi full of happiness and joy.

I had laughed, been excited, tense, on the edge of my seat as to what was going to happen next, and then I hear a small portion of fans were unhappy with the film because they didn't agree with the direction Rian Johnson took the film; felt they had been betrayed. Are you serious? So what it wasn't what you were expecting, that was the beauty of it; it kept you guessing as to where it was going to go. Between you and me, I honestly believe they were just butt hurt that it wasn't their vision for the movie. Sorry to say, but no film will ever live up to your hype, ever. It will never happen. There are going to be things about a film you love that has issues in it because there may be things you don't like about it. For me, not being a raging fan of this series (quite honestly, I didn't care for this series until Force Awakens, which is my favorite of all the movies), I left extremely satisfied. I loved that nothing you thought would happen would actually happen, because we all had ideas about where the series was going to go after Force Awakens, but the lovely Rian Johnson threw everything out and did something new, which is something I think fans were not ready for.

The movie takes place almost directly following the events of the first movie (Force Awakens) and we are introduced to our characters attempting to get away from a Destroyer of the First Order. Don't worry about spoilers, there won't be any in this review, so sorry in advance for it being short. I would rather people go see it for themselves than learn everything here and never bother seeing the movie. While the amazingly exciting battle forges on, we cut to Luke and Rey, where they were at the end of Force Awakens, and as many have probably figured from the trailers, Luke has no interest in training Rey, because as we know from the last film, Luke went into hiding because he had felt he let down his family by letting Han and Leia's son go to the dark side. He has been living on this island planet for years, and we are to assume Rey is his first human contact in some time, but let me to tell you now that Luke and Rey's relationship in the film is funny, heartfelt, and seemed very real to me; almost like a father/daughter routine (no, that's not a spoiler), and after much resistance, Luke finally gives in and begins to train Rey, who is much more in touch with the force than we thought.

All the returning characters: Finn, Poe, Rey, all have remained as charming as ever. Adam Driver absolutely kills it as Kylo again, and he has much more depth to his character this time around as well, as we learn more about him, and how much he really is still struggling with light and dark. And if you think Rey and Luke's relationship is well done, then just you wait, because when Rey and Kylo start their relationship, Rian gives them a lot of screen time together, and it works completely. I won't spoil their reason for being together (not dating, just actually speaking and communication with one another), but let's just say it leads to one of the biggest twists in the movie, and honestly, I did not see it coming, and I loved every moment from it. If I had complaints, it would be that Captain Phasma is wasted again, like she was in Force Awakens. Also, there were a lot of questions I wish had been answered, and some of the answers they did give weren't the greatest, but aside from those couple complaints, I felt this movie was terrific by all accounts, and believe me when I say this: I know it won't happen, but I really believe Mark Hamill deserves a nomination for an Oscar, I forgot just how wonderful an actor he really is, since I don't see on the big screen much anymore.

And finally, I will end it with this, for all those wondering: yes, Carrie Fisher rocks this movie. She is one of the best parts of the film. I feel like it is one of her best performances and a great farewell to the beloved actress. Again, I'm sorry this is so short, I really don't want to spoil anything. Just let me say, don't believe some of the haters out there. Rian Johnson took chances. For the most part, they worked. It was a different film, but different isn't always a bad thing, I am looking forward to how they will end this series when J.J Abrams comes in to the finish it. Go see it. It is meant to be seen on the big screen.
