Star Wars: The Last Jedi Predictions and Review

Movie Review

First of all, SPOILER ALERT! You probably already figured that, but just in case you haven’t seen Episode VIII: The Last Jedi yet and want to, you have been warned.

You can say I'm a little Star Wars obsessed. I mean, my 12th birthday party was Star Wars-themed. And the newest film got me almost as excited as a young kid again on Christmas morning. The trailers, the characters, the anticipation... and not to mention the passing of the late, great Carrie Fisher. Everything for this movie seemed primed to blow away even my greatest expectations.

Would it be similar to Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back? Would there be a big parental reveal? (come on, we all guessed Luke as Rey's father!) Would the resistance fall once again to the evil villain, now Supreme Leader Snoke and the First Order? Would there be romance? An epic battle at a rebel base? All of these questions, and more, flooded my head as the first notes of the famous Star Wars theme began to play over the scrolling text. "This was it," I thought excitedly. "We will finally get answers to these questions."

And just as quickly, my hope faded. For several reasons.

LUKE, LUKE, LUKE

Why did he have to throw the lightsaber like that? It made a serious and important moment, one everyone was waiting for, into a farce. The first meeting between Rey and Luke seemed like a cheap joke. Couldn't he have just as easily not taken the lightsaber and walked away like he did after throwing it? I know he has become disillusioned with the Jedi, but there would still be some respect for such an ancient weapon.

Rey's Parents...What??

So after all of this waiting, guessing, analyzing, her parents are nobodies who don't even get any screen time? No flash back? It seemed to me that the writers got through most of the script and then realized her parents weren't a part it and instead just had Ben Solo state the facts. MAYBE, he was lying or we haven't seen the whole truth, and we'll find out more in the final installment, but I'm not holding my breath. I had a feeling it wouldn't be as obvious as Luke, but there should have been something, anything to see about them. Why is she so powerful with the force? Was she born of the force like Anakin? Are her parents still alive? Did they really just sell her for drinking money? Always more questions. Personally, I was rooting for an Obi Wan connection...a granddaughter perhaps. But for now it seems pretty final.

And, Sigh, Snoke.

He seemed like a, pardon my language, badass in the last film. He was huge and shrouded in mystery. A true, evil villain to disdain. But then we learn almost nothing about him before Ben has a chance to kill him. Where did he come from? How old is he? He seemed pretty old and powerful, so where was he during the time of the Empire? Was it really necessary for Kylo Ren to kill him if he wasn't going to join Rey? There was a prediction that he and Rey would unite and create a more balanced way to use the force, not as a Jedi or Sith, but it seems to me that Kylo Ren is just all evil now. Could Rey still get through to him in the next installment? I doubt it, but I guess anything is possible.

While I will always be a devoted Disney and Star Wars fan, this installment left me disappointed. Not many questions were answered, and the comedy has become a little too distracting. I guess I can only wait for Episode IX to see how the new trilogy will be wrapped up. On a happier note, the scene with Poe making fun of General Hux was hilarious!
