The All New Episodic 'Tremors' Reboot Set to Star Kevin Bacon Has Been Canned!

Despite a 'Fantastic Pilot'

It was the news that all us old-school sci-fi fans were overjoyed to hear. Tremors, the cult classic movie from the 90s was not only returning to the screen but was returning with Kevin Bacon, the original star, and it was to release as an episodic TV series.

At long last, after 25 years, the hugely popular sci-fi horror was set to make a comeback. Plans for the release were announced back in 2015 with SyFy spearheading production.

The show was to take a similar approach to that of Ash vs. Evil Dead wherein the show would focus on Bacon’s character 25 years after the events of the original 1990 movie. It would centre back on the town of Perfection as the Graboids return for round two of their assault. It would see Bacon forced to step up, once again, and defend the town (and inevitable the world) against the mighty worms.

What makes it more interesting is the fact that the character would also be trying to "overcome age, alcohol and a delusional hero complex."

"The killer Graboid worms that nearly destroyed the small town of Perfection, Nevada 25 years ago are back and the town’s only hope for survival is Valentine McKee (Bacon) who beat them once, but to do it again, he’ll have to overcome age, alcohol and a delusional hero complex. The movie revolved around natives of the town who have to defend themselves against strange underground creatures that are killing them one by one."

But, alas, our hopes were dashed as Bacon recently announced on his social media accounts that the reboot of the classic sci-fi horror had been canned.

"Sad to report that my dream of revisiting the world of Perfection will not become a reality," he went on to say, "Although we made a fantastic pilot (IMHO) the network has decided not to move forward. Thanks to our killer cast and everyone behind the scenes who worked so hard. And always keep one eye out for GRABOIDS!"

There has been no further word from Bacon, or SyFy, so we are not sure what is happening to the show or to the rights. I think it sounds great – If I were Netflix, I would snap it up in a heartbeat.

The original movie was the most popular of the bunch, as always. It was the only movie to star the lead actor, Kevin Bacon. The franchise shifted four sequels and a TV series, but it did not retain the viewership throughout and only ran for one season. This may be where the hesitance from SyFy came from.

But we do live in different times now where episodic sci-fi TV Series are the in thing. Not only that, but shows that hark back to the 80’s and 90’ sare also pulling in huge numbers now. Nostalgia for bad hair, terrible fashion, and Walkman plugging is all the rage—and we all know that Kevin Bacon can rock a Walkman!

And, in other news, as I referenced Ash vs. Evil Dead, it was announced recently that the series will not be returning for another season. However, as I covered last month, the contingencies for this are in place. In an interview with EW, Campbell stated that if the TV series gets canned, then Evil Dead 4 would certainly be their go-to project.

"We're going to see what the TV gods have in store for us. We're ready either way. If they take us off the air, we can think about another movie. And if they don't, we can just keep plugging away,"

So, at least there is some good news for Ash, but for Bacon and the GRABOIDS, the future is more uncertain. For more TV and movie news, keep it locked to Vocal!
