The Mandela Effect

That isn't what I remember.

Did anyone read the Berenstein Bears growing up? You know, the one about the little bears who learn valuable moral and safety lessons with every story. Except it isn’t spelled that way. The correct spelling is Berenstain. A large percentage of individuals, including myself, specifically remember the “e” instead of the “a” in the last syllable.

There is actually an explanation for this, mostly viewed as a conspiracy theory. It’s called The Mandela Effect. The Mandela Effect is when someone has a clear memory of something that never happened in this reality. Many individuals, many who have never met in any instance, remember exact events with exact details. However, history begs to differ with these memories. There are many speculations on what this exactly means. Some believe in alternate realities, some believe we are experiencing some sort of holodeck simulation with programming glitches. Alternate realities make more sense to me. Google has thousands of hits for the phenomenon, and many questions to go along with it. Are we in an alternate reality? Does space and time itself seem to be folding and overlapping our perceptions?

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a revolutionary defiant who led the people of South Africa. President Mandela died on December 5, 2013, however, a large number of people around the world who have NEVER met seem to recall him dying in prison in the 1980s. A number of conspiracy theorists with the same memories found each other on online forums, thus coining the name Mandela Effect.

The Mandela Effect states that both sides with different memories are still remembering correctly, just from alternate realities or alternate timelines. The “false memories” are often referred to “sliding” between realities, or timelines.

Now it isn’t just a small number of people who remember Mandela passing in the 80s. We are talking thousands, most of which have never met one another, of people recalling this alternate reality. Some believe it isn’t just one reality overlapping with the one we are currently in, but possibly multiple.

I myself have no recollection of Nelson Mandela's prison days because I did not yet exist. However, when he died in 2013, I remember the confusion that surfaced. My Nana had even made comments on remembering his passing in the 80s while imprisoned.

Billy Graham

Billy Graham was a famous Christian evangelist and ordained Southern Baptist minister. He died February 22, 2018.

Many people, thousands, remember something else. These people have specific recollections of his funeral airing in the early 2000s. Many others have the same memory, but different time frame. These time frames range from the 90s to the fall of 2017. This one hits close to home for me because my great-grandpa watched Billy Graham all the time and read his books. I specifically remember him talking about how Billy had died in the 90s and how often he would reference the man. He had really made an impact on my great-grandpa and his recollections of the tv aired funeral were so specific. My great-grandpa passed several years ago, so I cannot compare notes since my discovery of this alternate memory.

I am not the only one with this memory. Thousands of individuals have spoken up and given their recollections to the media and blog posts. Just search the world wide web for more information, you may find a lot of the posts confusing if you are experiencing an alternate memory.

There are an ample amount of alternate realities listed on several forums. Instances as simple as a replacement of a single word such as Interview With A Vampire, rather than Interview With The Vampire. Is it as simple as our memories playing tricks on us? Or is there something bigger going on that we cannot logically explain?
