A Star Wars Dark Side Story

Back in May, we were treated to the second standalone Star Wars with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Unfortunately, Solo was quickly slammed by fans soon after its announcement as a story we didn't need to see play out and was met with empty theaters upon its release. Star Wars fans are ready for something new, and they made this clear in their rejection of what was meant to be an act of good faith by the powers that be at Disney and Lucasfilm.

So what could Disney plan to do next? Darth Revan. I am sure I threw most of you a curve ball with that after all the title of this article is "The Sith Triumvirate" which is a different storyline in the Star Wars EU. After the negative response to Episode 8: The Last Jedi and Solo, speculation exploded on where the next trilogy in the main saga would take us, and many concluded it would take us away from the Skywalker family back to the Old Republic era.

Darth Revan is the most popular character from the Old Republic era of the Star Wars EU, his rise, fall, and subsequent redemption is legendary in the Star Wars community. If pulled off correctly his story could make for a fantastic trilogy into the main saga, and this is why I think The Sith Triumvirate would make for a perfect example of another standalone film.

The Triumvirate storyline picks up where Darth Revan's ends with Kreia, the future Darth Traya, being cast out by the Jedi order for so many of her pupils falling to the dark side of the Force. She turns to the dark side and seeks out what she describes as "wounds" in the Force, powerful Force users who experienced events that transformed them and scarred the Force itself. These Force users become her apprentices who she gives the titles Darth Sion, the Lord of Pain & Darth Nihilus, the Lord of Hunger.

Darth Sion was a Sith who would not die; he used the constant pain he experienced, his anger and hatred as a way to fuel his dark side powers keeping his soul tethered to his body. His physical body cracked and decayed and each time he was struck down his body deteriorated and became more deformed. His brutality was well known throughout the galaxy making him feared by Jedi and Sith alike.

Darth Nihilus was present during the activation of a superweapon known as a Mass Shadow Generator that decisively ended the war between the Republic and Mandalorians. The superweapon devastated the planet of Malachor V and wiped out almost all of the life on the planet. Darth Nihilus was one of the few survivors, but he did not emerge unscathed, he found he had an unceasing hunger that could not be satisfied. He used the force to drain the life out of his victims and became so powerful he could drain the life from entire planets at a time. His body withered away until his soul was bound to his mask in within his robes.

After finding Sion and Nihilus, Traya trained them and together took control of Revan's empire. Together they laid waste to the Jedi Order in what has come to be known as the First Jedi Purge and brought the galaxy to the brink of collapse. The Triumvirate would not last, her disciples turned on her and severed her connection to the Force. She went into exile while she sought another wound in the Force, which she found was a Jedi exile named Meetra Surik who had been in exile in the Outer Rim after her nature was discovered.

Traya sent the Exile against her former pupils who the Exile defeated in turn. She first fought Darth Nihilus who she defeated in a lightsaber duel and watched him disappear like a Force ghost. She then fought Darth Sion and convinced him to let go of his pain so he could die. The Exile then turned to Darth Traya who had revealed her true identity and defeated her mysterious mentor.

The Sith Triumvirate: A Star Wars Dark Side Story

The Sith Triumvirate: A Star Wars Dark Side Story would take place after the events of the Revan trilogy and would begin sometime after Darth Nihilus's and Darth Sion's betrayal. The opening would have Darth Traya narrating the fall of Revan, the banishment of Kreia from the order, the forming of the Triumvirate and Nihilus's and Sion's betrayal.

The film will depart from the storyline and will center on the Meetra as she first meets Kreia and begins training with her to take down Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion. Meetra begins suspecting Kreia is not what she is trying to portray herself to be, and one day she discovers Kreia's true identity causing a duel to erupt. Darth Traya flees with Meetra following her.

The pursuit brings Meetra face to face with the devastation that Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion have brought to the galaxy; entire planets drained of life, a Jedi temple in ruins and its inhabitants slaughtered, refugee ships destroyed, etc. Her pursuit of Darth Traya inadvertently causes her to cross paths with Darth Nihilus who is also hunting for Darth Traya. The two fight, she eventually gains the upper hand and defeats Darth Nihilus. His robes fall to the ground as his spirit is released from them.

Before she leaves Darth Nihilus's ship, Meetra intercepts a transmission from Darth Sion stating he has found Darth Traya and is en route to her location. Meetra uses Nihilus's ship to travel to the location and allows Sion and his forces to board it. She engages Sion in a fierce duel but is ultimately able to convince him to release his pain and anger allowing her to defeat him. Another ship appears and opens fire on Nihilus's ship. Meetra escapes the ship before it is destroyed but is captured by the attacking ship which is revealed to be under the control of Darth Traya.

Traya reveals she used Meetra to defeat Nihilus and Sion, something she could not do herself and orders her forces to kill Meetra. A vicious battle breaks out in which Meetra manages to defeat Traya's forces. Traya then engages Meetra using telekinesis to wield three lightsabers simultaneously. After a long duel, Meetra defeats Traya and destroys the ship with the last of the Triumvirate's forces with it.

Emma Stone: Meetra Surik

The lead role of Meetra Surik I would give to Emma Stone, she is a talented actress with many accolades and honors to show for it. She would be able to execute the complex Meetra for the big screen.

Judi Dench: Darth Traya

Next, for the role of Darth Traya, I would cast the legendary Judi Dench. Her portrayal of the mentor of Daniel Craig's iteration of James Bond is evidence enough she would nail Darth Traya. Seeing her in a lightsaber duel would be nothing short of amazing!

Cillian Murphy: Darth Nihilus

For the role of Darth Nihilus, I would cast Cillian Murphy. He is a fantastic actor who we have seen in several menacing roles. He would be able to nail the performance and do Nihilus the justice he deserves.

Mark Strong: Darth Sion

Finally, for the role of Darth Sion, I would cast Mark Strong. If you have seen the film Sunshine, then you know how intimidating he can be in a dark role. Not to mention he looks like Sion, minus the decay and deterioration.
