All About Elementals: Part 3 of My Book of Shadows

Mystical creatures have power over and dwell within the elements Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. "Elemental" includes gnomes, sylphs, salamanders, and undines. Some Elementals can also be creatures that are spirit-like in nature and human-like in appearance. While each elemental is different and has a different personality, they tend to share characteristics with other Elementals in their element. For instance, a fire elemental is passionate and easily angered while an earth elemental is grounded and takes a lot of time to think/reflect or act. Often, Elementals are found close to a certain area where their element is most prominent, however, over the past few years they have been seen less and less. For all Elementals, it is very dangerous to your and your bloodlines' health to misuse their aid or deserve them.

Gnomes

Gnomes fall under the element of Earth and are generally found where there are mineral deposits, erosion of rock, formation of crystals, or other geological formations. They tend to vibrate at a frequency that makes them invisible to the human eye but that they can still interact with this plane. They are traditionally protectors of hidden treasures deep within the earth. Gnomes are not ones to help humankind, however, they’re valuable allies if you can win the trust of one over. Gnomes came to be known as goblins in the rise of Christianity due to the legend that the gnome king is named Gob. His followers then became of goblins and seen as evil.

Sylphs

Sylphs fall under the element of air and are found where clouds gather, the formation of rain/snow, and in the growth/maturity of all plant life. In the old legends they were considered oracles and spoke to humans through the sound of wind going through a tavern. Some myths even suggest that the Greek Muses are actually sylphs. Like gnomes, the sylphs resonate or vibrate at a frequency that makes them invisible to humans. However, unlike the gnomes, they resonate at a higher frequency which allows them to easily pass between the realms. Oftentimes the sylphs will gather around poets or artists and whisper into their ear to impart their inner vision of spiritual beauty. Often, the sylphs appear as the classic image of fairies. Similar to the gnomes, sylphs are said to be ruled by a being named Paralda.

Salamanders

Salamanders fall under the element of fire and can be found around various bodies of water. They appear as little balls of unexplained light floating above the water at night when they are most active. Legend has it that salamanders were the first to befriend humans and taught us how to use torches and other aspects of fire. Salamanders can influence a person's emotions most efficiently out of all elementals and also have control over our body temperature. Salamanders are also a very familiar tale to sailors as the term St. Elmo's Fire is used to describe salamanders who appeared to check out the sails on boats during the night. The salamanders are said to be ruled by a king named Djinn.

Undines

Undines fall under the element of water/liquid and humidity. They appear as mermaids and water nymphs from classic literature. Springs, streams, and wells are favored by Undines, however, their traditional homes are among marsh reeds and vegetation growing beside rivers and lakes. Undines are overall very friendly towards humans and their presence often has a strong influence on a person's emotional state. Ancient lore says that these beings are ruled by a being named Necksa. Undines often shift their shape when speaking to humans. They can appear as a regular human and are often confused with Lady of the Lake figures or other beautiful maidens associated with bodies of water.

Elemental Invocation

“Earth, air, fire, water, spirit

Open your hands to me.

Earth, air, fire, water, spirit

Open your hearts to me

Earth, air, fire, water, spirit

Open your souls to me.

Earth, air, fire, water, spirit

Lend your power to me”
