The universe is full of so many wonders that scientists have explored for many years. With the advancement of technology, they have been able to unlock some of the secrets of our observable universe. From supermassive black holes to other celestial bodies floating around the universe, documentaries about space travel, space exploration, and other mysteries of the universe are sure to be a hit for people who love outer space. You don’t have to be a science fiction aficionado to truly appreciate films like this, though. The information presented in documentaries of this kind provide something that anyone would find absolutely interesting, so long as they are even a little curious about the celestial bodies that exists out beyond the stratosphere.

This documentary about space travel tells the story of Gene Cernan, one of the Apollo astronauts to land on the moon. The film takes a look at the events that took place off our planet that caused our desire to put people on the moon. This documentary is about more than just the space program. It seemed like the topic of space exploration had become somewhat stagnant in the last decade or so. The documentary takes you into this new phenomena, where galaxies are born and which have the potential to destroy anything that gets in their way. For anyone who really wants to know the secrets of dark energy and the possibility of warp drives, this is a film you must watch.

The Real Death Star takes viewers on the real science behind the premise of the Death Star, which was capable of destroying worlds in the Star Wars films. The film looks at the theory behind creating gamma ray bursts that have the potential to wipe out more than just planets, but entire solar systems. Anyone who loves documentaries about space travel will kick themselves if they don’t put this one at the top of their watchlist.

Who doesn’t like Neil deGrasse Tyson? The scientist has become one of the most popular hosts for all things mysterious in the universe, and for good reason. He not only knows the material inside and out, but he can deliver it in a way that anyone can digest. Tyson looks at the ways that new technology is helping scientists to explore aspects of the universe that people never thought would be available anywhere beyond science fiction books and movies.

National Geographic takes viewers from Earth to the edge of our observable universe in a single shot. They use some fantastic computer generated images coupled with actual images taken from the Hubble Space Telescope to take viewers on a journey that most have never seen before. The Wonders of the Universe collection explores the history of some of the most far off celestial bodies in our own solar system, as well as the other nebulae and galaxies that also call our universe home.

Director Seth McFarlane channels Carl Sagan with the documentary Cosmos. Hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the 13-part documentary series that explores everything the universe has to offer. Any list of the best documentaries about space travel that doesn’t include this title is truly lacking in quality. From the formation of our own Milky Way galaxy to the more unknown features of our universe, the series is a must watch for anyone who is interested in the cosmos and the secrets they hold.

You don’t have to be a science buff to really appreciate documentaries about space travel. All you need is an open mind and the desire to have that mind blown by the wonders presented in the best space travel movies, and you'll be sure to enjoy the ride given to you by like documentaries.
