John Simm's incarnation of the Master is voted one of the best since Doctor Who began back in 1963. Simm first appeared as the Master in the series 3 finale in 2007, alongside David Tennant as the 10th Doctor, where the Master was killed and he refused to regenerate. However, this wasn't the end, as Simm's Master was resurrected for Tennant's final adventure, which aired Christmas Day 2009 and New Year's Day 2010. Ever since Tennant and Simm bowed out of the show in 2010, we've not seen Simm ever since.

Ever since the breaking news released last week explaining John Simm will be returning to #DoctorWho as the Master in series 10, lots of news relating to his role has been spilling out frequently in preparation for the premiere of the new series, which begins on Saturday 15th April. Recently, Radio Times have revealed that John Simm's Master in series 10, who will be seen onscreen alongside current Master (Missy) played by Michelle Gomez, will have a much bigger role in the show than he previously had in 2007. Speaking to Radio Times, Doctor Who executive producer, Brian Minchin, revealed this:

"We kept it a secret because people in Cardiff are very kind. He [John Simm] was there for quite a few weeks, he was actually filming on the streets and nobody saw him, and he was in the studio. We were so thrilled by the idea of it, we were delighted, because John loves Doctor Who, and he loves the whole world of it, so when he heard what showrunner Steven Moffat is planning, which I won’t tell you, but when John heard what Steven was planning he was so excited. It was brilliant to have him on set – he’s a real joy to have around.”

How Does This Mean John Simm Will Have A Huge Role In Series 10?

It has been reported that Simm was filming his scenes on location and in the studio all throughout February. During February, the three-part story was filmed, which is set to feature brand new creatures titled "The Monks", and will have Michelle Gomez guest starring as Missy. With Simm filming in February, it is now assumed that he will be a huge part of the three-part series, and is rumoured to have a battle with Missy.

According to multiple sources, current showrunner for Doctor Who, Steven Moffat, has been planning this Multi-Master story ever since he took over Russell T Davies as showrunner. However, Moffat intended to keep Simm's return confidential and planned to reveal his return at the end of the trailer, which would follow episode 1 of series 10 on Saturday. But with the news already revealed, it appears fans were not disappointed, well according to Brian Minchin anyway.

“When people heard John Simm was back they were excited and they were happy, so I’d be a bit churlish to be complaining about that. And one of the things about Doctor Who is we’re a show people like to find out news about, and that they like to get excited about, and that’s a good thing really. It’d be a bit mean-spirited to whinge about that."

Final Thoughts

You can catch #PeterCapaldi, Pearl Mackie, Matt Lucas, John Simm and Michelle Gomez all in one episode very soon. But, all focus is currently on the premiere episode titled 'The Pilot', which broadcasts this weekend. You can see clips from 'The Pilot' in the current trailer below, which shows old and new enemies popping up to cause more mayhem.
