Never Surrender
A lot can happen in a minute. In fact, in the last sixty seconds over two hundred babies were born in the world and almost half will spend the first years of their lives in poverty. Over one hundred people died in that same minute and at least one died of the Big C. That one cause of death no one likes to talk about, because saying its name out loud might give it power or somehow invite it into our lives.

When the Guardian Returns
Nicole opened her eyes slowly and blinked into the too bright light. For a moment, she stared up into the tree canopy above and watched the leaves sway in a gentle, but steady breeze. Small glimpses of the bright blue, cloudless sky raised questions. As did the fact that the sun seemed to be directly overhead, blocked intermittently by a broad tree canopy.

A Dragon's Love
It is difficult for me to write about women who have inspired me. While I am drawn to strong women, they also repel me. I gravitate like a satellite in their general orbit, yet I struggle with the abuse and betrayal of so many women in my life, that I tend to feel more comfortable around men. With that said, the women in my life have been few. They have also been mighty.

Guardian Angel
“Are we lost?” my brother’s voice warbled. “Of course not.” Yet as we paused there at the edge of the snow-covered woods, I wasn’t nearly as sure as I sounded. The short burst of snowfall while we were sledding had covered our way home and now all the trees looked the same, taunting skeletons leering at me as I tried to choose the right path. The lengthening shadows told me we didn’t have long before nightfall.

The Adventures of Olli
Once upon a time, a child loved me. My child’s mom always started her stories with those first four words, and I would listen and hang on every word. I learned the beauty of words that way, as mom told her stories and my child babbled back to her in answer. My child usually fell asleep, dreaming deep, by page ten, yet mom would continue reading until the end. Perhaps she knew I was listening, tucked against my child’s chest, feeling her heartbeat against me. I would listen raptly and watch the way mom’s lips formed each word. Until she would say those dreaded final words and it was lights out until morning.
